Jackson County Board of Education

The Jackson County School District covers a large, geographically diverse area in norhteast Alabama.  In a region noted for its beautiful terrain, the eighteen Jackson County schools may be found in the valleys and along the plateaus that define this area of the Southern Appalachians.  Each school is unique as each developed to serve the needs of a unique community, but all schools are united in their desire to provide a quality program for the over 6000 students served by the system.

The Jackson county School System employs over four hundred classroom teachers.  Almost 60% of these teachers hold a Master's Degree, and 6.5% hold an Educational Specialist Degree or Doctorate.  The teachers in the Jackson County School System employ a variety of instructional strategies designed to meet the diverse learning needs of their students.  Teachers take a research-based approach to reading instructon using a basal reader, direct instruction in phonics, and independent reading.  Mathematics instruction is systematic and features hands-on activities where applicable.  In kindergarten through eighth grade, students take an inquiry approach to science using a Hands-On-Science Program in collabaoration with the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  At the high school level, students may take advanced academic courses from Northeast State Community College while remaining on their high school campus.  The courses taken in the Dual Enrollment program give the student both high school and college credit.  Advanced Placement classes are available to students through the state of Alabama's ACCESS program.

Instruction is supported by a number of carefully selected software  programs to enhance student learning.  In addition, students participate in computer literacy classes on a regularly scheduled basis beginning in kindergarten.  The system's technology program has been recognized for its innovation and excellence by the Alabama State Department of Education.

The mission of the Jackson County School System is to help students achieve in school in order for them succeed in life.  High expectations paired with solid instruction results in outstanding achievement by Jakson County students on state and natonal assessments.  Five of the system'sschools have been recognized by the state for outstanding academic excellence.
